To choose an omega-3 supplement in Sri Lanka, compare the EPA and DHA amounts, the number of capsules needed, the source and the pack's condition. A prominent “1000 mg fish oil” claim does not mean 1000 mg of EPA and DHA. Those are different measurements.
Start with your diet and preferences. Someone who regularly eats oily fish has a different starting point from someone who avoids fish altogether. A supplement can be a convenient way to add particular fatty acids, but it is not a compulsory gym purchase or a substitute for varied meals.
Fish oil, omega-3, EPA and DHA: four different label terms
Fish oil is the source ingredient. Omega-3 refers to a family of fatty acids within that oil. EPA, short for eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, are two members of that family. When comparing these products, read their separate quantities and add them together.
Other fatty acids can also contribute to the total omega-3 figure. Consequently, total oil, total omega-3 and combined EPA plus DHA need not be identical. A bottle displaying the biggest oil number is not necessarily the most concentrated option.
Plant foods such as flax and chia provide another omega-3, ALA. They remain useful foods, but their ALA figure should not be read as an equivalent amount of preformed EPA and DHA. Algae-derived supplements are a different plant-based option because some provide EPA and DHA directly.
A real label example: The inspected Applied Nutrition panel lists 1000 mg fish oil in one softgel, with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. Combined EPA plus DHA is therefore 300 mg, not 1000 mg. This is label arithmetic, not a personalised dose recommendation.

Per capsule is not always per daily serving
Read the heading above the nutrition numbers. A panel can show values per capsule while directions suggest a different daily serving. Another product may display its figures for two capsules. Comparing those without adjustment creates a misleading result.
Keep three questions separate: what does one capsule provide, what does the manufacturer direct, and what is appropriate for you? The table answers the first question only. It does not prescribe one capsule a day or suggest increasing the amount to match another product.
If a clinician has recommended a specific EPA/DHA intake for a medical reason, bring the exact label to them or your pharmacist. Do not translate an oil-weight headline into a treatment dose, and do not use a general shopping guide to manage a diagnosed condition.
Fish oil or algae: choose for your requirements
Fish-derived
Check fish allergens, the capsule shell and individual dietary requirements. Source and suitability matter alongside price.
Algae-derived
Useful for people avoiding fish-derived ingredients. Confirm the complete formulation is suitable for your vegan diet.
Food first
Look at what you actually eat across the week. A busy schedule or gym membership alone does not establish a supplement need.
In a Sri Lankan routine built around rice and curry, consider which fish you eat and how often, rather than counting every fish meal as nutritionally identical. Oily fish and other fish differ. If you do not eat fish, that is a practical reason to investigate algae options, not a reason to assume a particular health problem.
Meal quality still matters. Our Sri Lankan protein-food guide discusses the food foundation separately. Omega-3 capsules are not protein supplements and do not replace that foundation.
What makes a credible label?
Look for clearly stated EPA and DHA quantities, a defined serving, a complete ingredient list, allergen information, storage instructions, an expiry date and a traceable batch code. “Premium”, “high strength” and attractive packaging do not answer these questions.
Separate manufacturing standards, sports banned-substance screening and oil-quality testing. These address different concerns. A logo on a photograph is not independently verified evidence of the current batch's certification or its freshness. Competing athletes should confirm the exact product and batch through the relevant testing programme's current records.
The Healthspan gallery shows an Informed-Sport logo and its listing describes certification. This guide has not independently checked the current batch register, so it does not promise batch clearance. For practical traceability, read our batch-code verification guide and how to choose a sports nutrition store.
Freshness and storage in Sri Lankan heat
Follow the pack's storage directions. Avoid leaving supplements in a parked car, direct sunlight or a hot gym bag all afternoon. Keep packaging closed and protect it from heat and moisture. Do not automatically refrigerate every product unless its directions call for it.
Check the seal and expiry when receiving the order. If capsules leak, the packaging is damaged or the smell has changed markedly, pause use and contact the seller or manufacturer. Smell alone cannot prove an oil is fresh, uncontaminated or oxidised; visual inspection is not a laboratory quality test.
Compare value without chasing a bigger dose
At the checked prices, Applied Nutrition costs approximately LKR 72 per softgel and Healthspan approximately LKR 233 per capsule. These figures are pack price divided by capsule count, not necessarily daily costs. Follow the selected product's directions when calculating how long a pack will last.
EPA/DHA concentration and dietary suitability also matter. In these examples, the algae option provides more combined EPA/DHA per capsule, while the fish-oil option costs less per capsule. Neither fact alone establishes which is best for you. Do not take extra capsules simply because a cost calculation makes a larger intake look attractive.

Does 1000 mg fish oil mean 1000 mg EPA and DHA?
No. Read the separate EPA and DHA values and add them. The total source oil includes more than those two fatty acids.
Is algae omega-3 the same as flaxseed oil?
No. Flaxseed oil supplies ALA; some algae supplements supply preformed EPA and DHA. Check the specific panel.
Will fish oil guarantee better gym recovery?
No. Do not buy it expecting guaranteed changes in soreness, muscle gain or performance. Training, food and sleep remain central.
Who should ask a clinician before taking it?
Seek advice if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines, have a bleeding disorder, an upcoming operation, relevant allergies or another managed medical condition. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and use in children also warrant individual guidance. Do not stop prescribed treatment.
Choose clarity over a headline number
Compare EPA and DHA, serving directions, dietary suitability, traceability and storage. Choose a supplement to meet a real requirement, not because every training stack appears to include one.
